My name is Karl Melvin and I am a clinical Psychotherapist (MIACP) specialising in Family Estrangement.
Based in Dublin, Ireland, for 10 years I have worked with individuals struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, the traumatic impact of abuse and in particular, family estrangement.
As well as being an accredited therapist with the IACP (www.irish-counselling.ie), I have a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Psychotherapy where my dissertation was entitled ‘The Experiences of Family Estrangement’.
My journey to personal freedom began in 2008, when I began the study of Psychotherapy.I wanted to first understand why I was the way I was, how my own development was negatively impacted by past events and how my adult self continued to chase childhood needs; and then find healthy, functional tools and techniques to meet those needs.
As a therapist, I work to help clients reach a deeper understanding of themselves and their connections to bad relationships (whether it is a family member, friend, partner or work colleague); working towards cutting the cords and finding freedom. But detachment is a process; often a painful one depending on how deep the enmeshment is. Depression, anxiety, heartbreak, neurosis and a deep sense of abandonment are natural symptoms of moving on and letting go and are often the reason many people choose to stay in a toxic relationship.
But there is ALWAYS hope!!
As we challenge ourselves and face the deep feelings of fear and hurt, the negative impact of life starts to shift, the internal triggers are not pushed so easily by external stimulus, we begin to feel less vulnerable, more comfortable in our heads and start to map out the life we want, need and deserve.
